Chapter 9
Yumi kept her breath perfectly slow and even as Gavyn eased from the bed. She tracked his movements around the room without opening her eyes, perking up when he approached the hidey-hole sheâd made for her pistol. Sheâd left that location easier to find than her other illicit tools, knowing that anyone searching her room would find the weapon first and be satisfied without continuing. But he only dressed quietly in his dirty clothes, then went still.
He was looking at her. She knew it as clearly as if sheâd been staring back at him. The almost imperceptible sound of his sigh seemed to whisper over her skin, and she couldnât restrain the faintest shiver.
The scuff of his bare heel across the floor toward the bed almost broke her will to keep her eyes closed. Was he going to attack? Was he going to make love to her again?
Instead, the thin blanket settled over her. With gentle tucks, he sealed away any drift of cold air, as unlikely as that was in this place.
She forced her muscles back to stay lax, even though some foolish part of her wanted to reach up, wrap her fingers around the back of his head, and draw him down for a kiss.
With another of those almost silent sighs, he stepped back. When the door opened, she hazarded the quickest glance from beneath mostly closed lashes. She caught only a glimpse of those worn-thin cargo pants over his butt as he slipped out.
After the door closed, she rolled to her back with a muttered curse.
Seduction was a perfectly valid method sheâd been taught to deploy as part of her missions, when necessary. Butâ¦any explosions were intended to decimate the heretical enemies of the Order, not blow away her senses with delight.
How had he known where to touch her? Sheâd deliberately not told him, but those eyes⦠He mustâve watched her. Heâd known what she liked, avoiding the tight holds that made her feel trapped, doubling down on the caresses that left her breathless, that set her senses spinning, as if she were flying. How could those big, rough hands that bashed apart a planetoid, rock by rock, be so tantalizing on her skin, so sure with every stroke? Was he, like her, something more than he pretended to be? Like this dead moon, were there treasures inside him if she took the time to dig?
With another curse inappropriate for a Candler, she shoved back the blanket, releasing the musky scent of their sexual exploits. She stumbled to her feet, graceless with the unexpected ache of long unused muscles, and hobbled to the sani-station, where she directed one hard blast of water at her face.
Miner 488 had been the first time sheâd ever used sex as a weapon without being expressly directed by her handler in her mission directives. Always before, sheâd found some other way. Why had she chosen intimacy with Gavyn Grey?
Their interlude didnât mean anything in the grander scheme of her dedication to the Order.
